Monaghan Field Visit, July 2014

The new EPA Water Framework Directive Integration and Coordination (WFD I&C) Unit went on a field visit this summer with representatives of Monaghan County Council and Inland Fisheries Ireland.

We visited two catchments in Monaghan, (i) the River Fane upstream and downstream of Lake Muckno, and (ii) the Clontibret stream, with a number of stops in each. At each stop, the story of how the catchment functions was discussed using local knowledge and GIS maps including land cover, soils, subsoils and aquifers. We looked at the physical setting, the pressures and the biological/chemical impacts in the stream, and linked them together to develop the story of how the catchment works.
